One: what makes effective communications?

  • Explore the objectives of communication and the difference between good and bad communications.
  • Discuss planning, context, stakeholders, messages, approach, perceptions.  

Two: aligning communication with strategy

  • How well do we understanding the company’s strategy?
  • How can we align local objectives to company objectives?
  • How can communications support and promote objectives?

Three: the managers’ role in communications

  • Is the manager the messenger or the ambassador?                         
  • What are the manager’s responsibilities in communication?
  • Using communications to motivate and involve as well as inform staff.

Four: how to communicate across functions

  • Discuss the barriers to cross-functional communication.
  • Identify the solutions.
  • Agree actions to promote good cross-functional communication.

Five: what is the role of new technology in effective communications?

  • Identify the benefits of communications using new technology.
  • Identify the challenges and pitfalls.
  • Agree actions to promote effective use of technology in      communications. 

Six: communicating through change

  • Discuss the results of studies into the way people respond to change.
  • How do we interpret these studies and deliver the right information at the right time?

Seven: the importance of feedback

  • What are the objectives of gathering feedback?
  • Which methods should we use?
  • Managing expectations - communicating results of feedback. 

Eight: ‘what do I do now?’

  • Challenge managers to ‘admit’ what they do, and don’t do, to contribute to good communications.
  • On basis of discussions so far, work up a brainstorm list of the main issues and what our main aims are.
  • Agree the best practices needed to achieve those aims.
  • Discuss and agree specific actions managers must take to achieve effective and consistent communications throughout the company.
  • How do we monitor? Agree next actions.
